Two young women and two young men are defending DNV’s honour at ONS 2004, competing for the Young Professional Company Award. Two years ago, during ONS 2002, DNV’s team of young professionals won the award in competition with Statoil, Norsk Hydro, ABB and Shell among others.

The Offshore Northern Seas conference and exhibition has become one of the very few events of its kind where young professionals focus upon the future of the offshore industry. DNV’s team is one of five to present their ideas to industry leaders and fellow young professionals.

The five teams are competing to win the prestigious Young Professional Company Award. Each team has been given an individual theme, DNV’s is “Looking back from 2034 – what made the Barents Sea an industry, environmental and social success?”

The DNV-team’s contribution is titled “Genie in a Barrel” - a multimedia show in which a member of the board dozes during a meeting just before holding his own presentation about the development of the Barents Sea. In a dream he meets a genie in a barrel.

Through their presentation the DNV team aim to provoke the audience and provide “food for thought” through fact-based ideas.

The genie, who is bound to the Barents Sea, offers the board member three wishes. He squanders his three wishes asking for money. However, the genie shows him how to achieve his financial gain through development of the Barents Sea. Before making his third and final wishes, he is shown a future scenario which changes his mind.

At this point he wakes up from his dream and makes his presentation at the board meeting, but a totally different presentation than he had intended – for the sake of saving the earth and achieving the goal of free energy for mankind.

DNV team member Maria Føre says: “We spent quite a while on brainstorming and fact gathering. Our team has interviewed both external and internal experts on topics relevant to developments in the Barents Sea.”

The winning team gets glory, honour – and a trip to London. This year the DNV’s competitors are young professionals from ExxonMobil, Paladin, Accenture, and Statoil.
