DNV is to help World-Wide Shipping manage inspections of its single hull tankers using Nauticus technology.

Recently, single-hull tankers have been subject to increased attention from maritime industry. Although World-Wide Shipping’s single hull VLCC’s are relatively young – all less than 15 years old - and only constitute a fraction of its fleet, the company has adopted Nauticus technology to manage the issue.
World-Wide Shipping has asked DNV Singapore to develop a proactive and practical solution to manage inspections of its single hull tankers. Drawing on resources from both DNV Oslo and the Nauticus Modelling Centre in Poland, DNV Singapore began work on the project.
Commenting on the project, Michael Aasland in DNV’s Maritime Service Centre in Singapore says: “DNV has extensive experience managing similar issues, and has already produced detailed and advanced calculations on single hull tankers. However, DNV Singapore consultants quickly recognised that the challenge faced by World-Wide Shipping involved the transfer of information from DNV’s technical experts to the owner’s hull inspectors. Specifically, how could they ensure that an extract of all of DNV’s technical reports would be communicated to the superintendents, hull team, and crew doing the inspections on board?
Inspection manual
The solution was to merge DNV’s experience and knowledge with Nauticus technology by preparing a user-friendly paper-based, ship-specific Fatigue Inspection Manual designed to guide inspectors directly to specific areas of concern.
According to Ragnar Hansen, DNV’s regional manager for South East Asia, the project has been a success. “The project is a realisation of the Nauticus on-board concept – bringing DNV’s survey experience and calculation results to the shipping industry using Nauticus technology,” he says. “Such a solution would not be possible without the 3D graphic models."
In order to support the implementation of the Nauticus Hull Inspection Manual within World-Wide Shipping, DNV is also running hull structure courses as a part of the regular Leadership Training Courses. World-Wide Shipping requires all their officers to complete this course.
The Nauticus Fatigue Inspection Manual will also be made available to the DNV surveyors in order to improve the quality of their inspections.
