Bjørn K. Haugland, DNV Business Assurance Chief Operating Officer (COO), recently recognised The Boeing Company for achieving one of the company’s major environmental goals by successfully certifying all major manufacturing sites to the ISO 14001 environmental standard by the end of 2008.

“This event signifies the successful joint undertakings of management and employees in Boeing to increase the awareness of continual environmental improvement throughout the organisation,” said Mr. Haugland, adding that “this has, without doubt, been one of the more extensive ISO 14001 certification efforts we have seen.” While initiating comprehensive employee involvement programmes, Boeing has emphasised efforts aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions, pollution and waste and increasing energy efficiency and recycle rates.
DNV offers a wide variety of services to the aviation industry, assisting companies in their efforts to achieve sustainable growth and development through effective managing. DNV and Boeing’s working relationship dates back to the mid 1990s when DNV started working with some of the Boeing sites, a successful collaboration that inspired additional teaming opportunities. In January 2008, Boeing selected DNV when it decided to engage with an independent and credible certification partner to register all of its major manufacturing sites to the ISO 14001 standard by the end of 2008. “DNV enjoys a market leading position when it comes to Environmental Management Systems (EMS) certification,” Mr. Haugland said.
ISO 14001 is a widely recognised and utilised international environmental management system standard. An ISO 14001 certificate proves that a company has been successfully measured against the standard and found compliant.
