DNV SeaSkill recently signed a contract with a distinguished maritime training provider situated in Cochin (India), International Education Council (IEC), for certification of its two years marine mechanical fitter course. Explaining he says, "The marine mechanical fitter course conducted by IEC promises students a high potential career in shipyards and dockyards and by bagging this maiden contract we set a benchmark for ourselves and the industry.”

Ensuring uniform quality of training
The certification to training programmes is verified against DNV's Standards for Certification No. 3.201 Learning Programmes dated May 2005. "The certification of a maritime course assures students and prospective students that the course is well structured and that it is in alignment with industry needs and requirements," says Vernon.

“The certification process goes beyond validating the course curriculum and schedules," says Vernon, adding, "It also verifies the qualification and competence of trainers and the examination process. The DNV certification process gives s a comprehensive 360 degree advantage making sure that students who enrol for this intensive course get their monies worth and more importantly gives them a career edge in their field of specialisation."

Man, Material, Machinery
Illustrating the need for course certification, Mr. Kuriacko Francis, Head of Department (Marine) at IEC says, "Man, Material and Machinery are the three integral parts of any industry and the perfect blend of all three parts constitutes the success of an organisation. However among these three aspects, man dominates the entire structure and controls the material and machinery elements. Hence knowledge on technical know-how and proper training is a vital requirement."

He goes on to say that, "With more than 7000 km of coastline and more than 3000 shipping companies in India, the manpower serving this industry is inestimable. IEC earnestly moulds best human power to cope with the demand in the future.”

DNV is a global leader in the maritime industry and they have played an important role to improve our standard of education and training and bring it to the International level, Kuriacko concludes.
